After reading JPPomare's debut novel 'Evie' last year, I was so excited at the prospect of reading 'In the Clearing' especially as various members of my family were raving about it. I was also lucky enough to attend an evening at my local bookshop, Farrell's in Mornington, at which JP and Christian White were discussing it. i tried to be restrained, but I have to admit, I devoured this in a couple of sittings - and it did not disappoint! The story 'In the Clearing' was inspired by a well-known cult 'The Family' who lived in the Dandenong Ranges not far from Melbourne. When a young girl is abducted both past and present begin to unravel and we're launched into a high-adrenaline read (talk about chilling and thrilling!). The flaws and fears of the main character were totally compelling, and Pomare conjures a highly credible and disturbing set up.
The novel had me second guessing what was about to happen, often getting it wrong and anxiously turning the pages to find out - well into the wee hours of the night. There are some great twists that I didn't see coming.
Watch out! This book is extremely compulsive reading and you'll struggle to put it aside. I thought it was even better than JPPomare's debut novel! Cannot wait to get my hands on his next masterpiece ...
